Warning! Fireworks!

Fireworks Alert!

Help me my dog is afraid of fireworks..

The fireworks season has begun. I refer to it as a season because fireworks typically go off between 1st December to 31st January the following year in celebration of Christmas, New Year’s Eve and Australia day.

We also tend to get fireworks on other long weekends, such as Easter and the Queen’s Birthday so keep an ear out then too.

Fireworks are not legal for anyone to purchase and set off in NSW however this doesn’t seem to stop people from getting them and setting them off in their own yards in suburbia.
This is the main problem, because fireworks in this context are let off unpredictably.

However you can check your local council, newspapers and community ads to find events that advertise they will have fireworks or that are likely to have fireworks. Moving into Christmas there will be many Christmas parties, festivals and carol nights that may use fireworks as celebrations.

Sadly many pets do NOT like fireworks. They find them to be scary, and oftentimes panic. A lot of dogs escape and go missing due to panicking during a fireworks event.
Even if you’re not completely prepared, you can still help get your dog safely through a fireworks event with short notice by following some of these tips.

What can you do for your pet right now?

  • Make sure that they are wearing a collar with an ID tag that has your current phone number on it
  • Update your pets microchip details to have your current contact details and address – you can do that online in NSW
  • Fix any gaps and escape points in your yard if you have to leave your pet outside
  • Preferably do not leave your pet outside. Bring them inside with you.
  • Leave them in a short term confinement area like a crate or laundry if you will be gone for a few hours in the evening.
  • Preferably stay at home with your pet during the night. Fireworks only go off when it is dark so try to be home then.
  • Play background noise to help muffle the noise of the fireworks outside. E.g. turn up the tv, put on some music.
  • Give them something to chew on. If your dog is used to them a long lasting chew like a Kong, Bully stick or Antler is a good choice. What about a yummy raw meaty bone?
  • Give them a comfy bed to relax in. A cosy den-like place to retreat to.
  • You cannot reinforce fear. It is OK to reassure your dog with your presence, calm gentle voice, pats, and treats if they respond to those things.

I will add to this article and update any fireworks listing with events as I find them.

Here are some of the community events just this weekend in Western Sydney that will have fireworks. Keep scrolling for the most recent events.

Note I am leaving these here for historical reference. As where there are fireworks one year they are likely to be there again the next.

Note if your dog has a history of escaping during fireworks or no amount of comfort you give can calm your pet then your dog is suffering severely from panic. There are other interventions you can make to help your pet. Training and sometimes medication can help. Enquire about a behavioural consultation with me today.
